GQA Level 1 Award: Frequently Asked Questions

GQA Level 1 Award in Construction Health & SafetyIn May 2021, we launched the GQA Level 1 Award in Construction Health & Safety. You may have a few questions on why you should choose the Level 1 CSCS Course, Test and Card.

Take a look below at some answers to frequently asked questions about the course and test. Hopefully, we can give you all the information that you need.

What is a GQA CSCS card?

The GQA Labourer CSCS card is one of CSCS’s Partner Card Schemes. The card provides proof that individuals working on construction sites have the appropriate training and qualifications for the job they do on-site. The GQA card holds the same weight as a Green card with construction sites; it’s the same card only issued by GQA and looks different.

What occupations are covered by the GQA CSCS Green card?

Construction operatives who work as general labourers and anyone who needs a Green CSCS card to access a construction site should attend this course.

How do you check the validity of the card?

The cards include a QR code on them which you can read on any smartphone or barcode reader. In addition, GQA contact details are also accessible on the card.

Will sites recognise the card?

Most construction sites should. CITB circulates any changes to cards or partner cards around the industry. For example, the GQA card carries a CSCS logo on it; construction companies throughout the country recognise this logo.

How long will it take to issue my card?

It will take approximately 1-2 weeks to receive your card rather than the usual 6-8 weeks.

Can I complete the course online?

Yes, the course is available online via remote learning. The course is delivered in a virtual classroom by a tutor using Zoom. The course content and assessments are the same as the classroom format, only provided electronically.

What are the benefits of attending the GQA Level 1 Award course?

The GQA Level 1 course is very similar to the CITB Health & Safety Awareness. The course allows you to gain the relevant qualification as part of the CSCS Green Labourer card application. You can also attend the class either in a live or virtual classroom, whatever suits you.

Like the HSA, the course meets the minimum training requirement for new starters in the industry and has the backing of industry leaders Build UK. In addition, CITB registered companies can also claim a £30 grant for each delegate who completes this course.

Why attend the course over the CITB Health and Safety Awareness?

The GQA course is a faster and easier way to obtain the Green CSCS Labourer card for employers and employees. You will complete both the course and the CSCS test on the same day. Therefore, there is no need to arrange a second exam on a different day, saving you and your company time and money. Not only that, but you do not need to complete a separate CSCS card application process; more time saved.

The Construction Health & Safety course is a Level 1 Award; the qualification does not expire. In comparison, the Health & Safety Awareness qualification needs to renew every 5-years. Therefore, you will only need to reapply for your CSCS card moving forward.

We conduct our  GQA online assessments through a secure exam system. The software picks up any suspicious behaviour throughout the exam, therefore, ensuring a fair and proper evaluation.
